Soulard roofs are almost never one system. A typical row house here has a steep slate or steep-pitch front block, a flat or low-slope rear ell, and shared parapet walls with the buildings on either side. The parapet-wall flashing is where most of these roofs fail, and it is the detail most contractors get wrong. We handle the steep slate, the flat membrane, and the parapet coping and counterflashing as one job, so the water does not find the seam between the trade who did the slate and the trade who did the flat.

Much of Soulard sits inside a local historic district, so anything visible from the street, the slate, the cornice, the parapet coping, is under design review. We know what the board expects and which materials clear it. On the hidden low-slope sections we have more room to value-engineer.
